A hill farm with tradition
The Niederkaseralm hill farm is situated 1,000 meters above sea level at the end of a property area named “Kurzer Grund” (bordering Salzburg) in the Kelchsau valley near Hopfgarten. Farmers from Hopfgarten have been running the die Niederkaseralm hill farm for centuries and milk is processed there into delicious cheese for as long as humans and animals have spent their summers in the Alps together.

A summer retreat for the cattle
On lush mountain meadows, 90 cows spend their summer retreat. As soon as the snow has melted and the grass begins to grow, the cows are brought to the hill farm at the end of May. They enjoy their “holidays“ in the fresh, clear mountain air with fresh spring water and lush Alpine fields abounding in herbs and thus, give the best Alpine milk.

Tasty cheese and fresh-made Alpine pasture product
For centuries, milk has been processed into cheese on the Niederkaseralm hill farm. It is managed from the end of May until the end of September, which means that during this period, the cattle is there and we serve drinks and snacks. Every day our cheesemaker processes the milk into fresh Almkäse (hill farm cheese), Tilsiter (light yellow semihard cheese), cream cheese, yoghurt and butter. These products can be tried and purchased directly on the farm.

An ideal excursion destination
The Niederkaseralm hill farm is an ideal excursion destination for hiking enthusiasts, but you can also reach it conveniently by car. After a beautiful hiking tour to one of the surrounding mountain summits, the Niederkaseralm hill farm is the perfect destination to round off a day full of events. A playground offers pleasure and entertainment for our youngest guests.
For your refreshment, there are products from the hill farm available, such as bacon, home-baked bread and also fresh cake is made every day. Let yourself be pampered with a delicious meal of bread and cheese, fresh whey or a hearty local snack!

The Alpine pasture – a world of experience
On the Niederkaseralm hill farm, milk has been made into butter and cheese for centuries. Experience the originality of food production – and experience the cows enjoying their summer on the Alpine pasture, giving best milk and watch how cheese is made.
We will be pleased to arrange a guided tour including cheese tasting for you!

The hill farm cheese is available all year at the farm shop in Hopfgarten (open every Friday 09:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.) as well as at the farmers’ managing the Niederkaseralm hill farm:

From Hopfgarten to the Kelchsau valley until you reach the tollgate (car park), walking time: about 1 ½ hours. The hill farm can also be reached by car easily (4 € trail maintenance fee).
